News Articles Columbus, Ohio PD Orders 8th MD 500E®

Reno, NV. July 21, 2005 - The Air Section of the Columbus Ohio Police Department has ordered its eighth MD 500E® for airborne law enforcement. The new aircraft will replace one of the oldest in keeping with the planned fleet replacement program designed to keep operating costs down.

Speed, agility, reliability and proven low operating costs are keys to success in the Columbus, Ohio Air Section. A fleet of six MD 500E®s currently patrol the city of 216 square miles in Central Ohio, and each aircraft flies about 1,000 hours a year, according to Sgt. Bill Mingus of the air unit. The Air Section has accumulated 34,000 hours flight time operating the MD500E. As an added benefit, the MD 500E®s are equipped with low noise four-bladed tail rotors, enhancing the unit's ability to fly neighborly.

From our standpoint the MD 500E® is an excellent product and fits our mission perfectly said Lt. Mike Elkins Commander of the Columbus PD air unit. The people of Columbus are used to us flying all of the time and it gives them a feeling of safety he stated.

The MD Helicopters family includes the twin-engine MD Explorer®, MD 600N®, and the MD 500® Series, including the MD 520N®, MD 500E® and the MD 530F®.

Only MD helicopters feature the NOTAR® anti-torque system, which is standard equipment on the MD Explorer® MD 600N® and the MD 520N® NOTAR® system-equipped aircraft are quieter and safer than helicopters with conventional tail rotors.
